At 4020 Consult, people are at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we proudly sponsored the QMCA's Emerging Professional of the Year Awards—to recognise and support the future leaders shaping our industry.
This award isn’t just a name on a plaque for us. It’s a reflection of who we are: future-focused, people-powered, and passionate about elevating emerging talent.

Celebrating Our Industry—Together
For Paulina O’Hagan and Madie Broom, the QMCA Awards were more than just an event—they were a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
“It was inspiring to see the industry come together,” Paulina shared, reflecting on her first time attending the ceremony. “The energy in the room, the stories behind the projects, the recognition of people at every level—it was clear how much collaboration and care go into building Queensland.”
Madie, a regular at the awards over the years, echoed the sentiment: “The QMCA Awards aren’t just about end results. They celebrate the people and the passion that drive our projects forward—across contractors, clients, consultants, and everyone in between.”
Shining a Light on Emerging Talent
Our sponsorship of the Emerging Professional in Infrastructure category is about more than recognition—it’s a commitment to supporting the next wave of leaders. This year’s finalists? All women. All outstanding.
“These women were intelligent, driven, and deeply committed to their work,” said Madie. “It was something to be incredibly proud of—not just for us at 4020, but for the entire industry. It showed just how bright the future really is.”
Paulina added, “There’s a generation coming through that’s willing to work hard, learn, and lead. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these finalists wins the Dale Gilbert Lifetime Achievement Award one day.”
A Culture of Collaboration
Despite being a competitive industry, the awards highlighted something that often goes unspoken: the deep culture of collaboration in infrastructure.
“Yes, we’re all technically competing,” said Paulina, “but at the end of the day, we’re one team with a shared goal: delivering great outcomes, safely and successfully.”
Madie noted the rise of joint ventures as a reflection of this collaborative spirit. “The most successful projects are delivered by people working together—from consultants to contractors to subbies. The awards night really captured that unity.”
Encouraging Future Leaders to Step Up

As a consultancy that works closely with early-career professionals, we understand how intimidating award programs can feel. But if there’s one message Paulina and Madie want to share, it’s this: just start.
“There’s nothing to lose,” said Paulina. “The experience alone—meeting people, learning from others, reflecting on your journey—is worth it.”
Madie agreed. “Being recognised can open doors in ways you can’t imagine. And if you're not sure where to begin, we’re always happy to help you get started.”
Infrastructure Is More Than Concrete and Steel
For us at 4020, infrastructure is personal. It’s meaningful. And every career path into the industry matters.
Paulina, who began her career in civil design, sees projects through both a technical and human lens. “I love watching things get built and knowing I was part of it,” she said. “Infrastructure touches every aspect of daily life—and being part of that is something special.”
Madie’s journey—from labour hire to senior advisory roles—has shaped her belief that there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ career path. “Our industry is huge, and there are so many directions to explore. What matters is finding what drives you.”
Reflecting on the Moments That Matter
This year’s awards included a moving spoken-word performance by Rupert, which brought the entire room to a standstill.
“It was a powerful moment,” said Paulina. “Everyone was silent—it really reminded us of the heart behind the work we do.”
Madie added, “Even the most senior leaders were visibly moved. It captured the emotional impact of our industry in a way few things can.”
Now is the Time
With Queensland’s infrastructure pipeline growing rapidly—especially in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympics—there has never been a better time to consider a career in infrastructure.
“We need people,” said Madie. “There are roles across the board—technical, legal, commercial, and hands-on. Whether you’re a graduate or changing careers, there’s a place for you.”
And if you’re wondering where to start, we’re always up for a coffee and a chat.
At 4020 Consult, we don’t just recruit—we help shape careers. Because when the right people connect with the right projects, the results speak for themselves.
