Queensland’s $174 Billion Construction Pipeline
Queensland’s construction industry is entering a significant period of growth, with a new portal providing a clearer picture of the projects, skills and materials needed to deliver it.
Launched by the Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), Property Council of Australia and Better Brisbane Alliance, the Queensland Construction Portal (QCP) brings together major public and private sector projects valued at $50 million or more, alongside forecasts for workforce, skills and materials demand.
Developed with government, BuildSkills Australia, the Queensland Major Contractors Association, RLB and industry, the portal provides a statewide view of Queensland’s major construction pipeline. It is designed to help industry, investors and governments better understand where future pressures, opportunities and investment needs are likely to emerge.
Major Pipeline
The portal identifies more than 617 major projects across Queensland, with a combined value of $174 billion through to 2029–30.
The pipeline includes projects across the construction industry, creating demand for workers, materials and supporting businesses. According to the portal, major project construction across the state is estimated to have increased from $33.64 billion in 2024–25 to $38.31 billion in 2025–26, based on Queensland growth rates published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Skills in Demand
The portal identifies six occupations facing the strongest demand relative to the available workforce:
Paving and surfacing labourers
Crane, hoist and lift operators
Concreters
Floor finishers
Building and plumbing labourers
Engineers
The demand for engineers is particularly relevant where major projects require a range of technical expertise throughout planning, design and delivery.
However, the figures also highlight that workforce requirements extend well beyond engineering roles. The availability of skilled trades and construction workers will be an important part of delivering the pipeline.
What Does This Mean for Infrastructure?
For Queensland’s civil infrastructure sector, the portal provides a consolidated view of the scale of future construction activity and the resources needed to support it.
Ensuring the right people, skills and materials are available when projects need them will require coordination across industry, government and the training sector.
BuildSkills Australia General Manager – Research and Strategy Dr Robert Sobyra highlighted the importance of this planning:
“The challenge is making sure we have the right skills in the right places at the right time.”
He said greater visibility of future demand would help industry, governments and training providers prepare the workforce needed to deliver the pipeline.
Major Growth
The Queensland Construction Portal brings together information that has previously been spread across different parts of the industry. By connecting project activity with workforce, skills and materials demand, it aims to support more informed decisions about investment and delivery.
